The Ultimate 7-Day Jungfrau Itinerary

Welcome to the enchanting world of the Jungfrau region, a captivating slice of the Swiss Alps that calls out to adventure seekers and nature enthusiasts alike. Nestled in the heart of Switzerland, the Jungfrau region is a haven of alpine splendor, where majestic peaks, serene valleys, and crystalline lakes create a picturesque landscape.

In August 2019, I set off on an exciting solo trip for a week in this region. I'm here to share my personal experiences and the exact itinerary I followed. This plan mirrors my unforgettable adventure but has been fine-tuned to help you get the most out of your time in this stunning alpine wonderland.

Now, let's dive into exploring fantastic hikes, incredible train rides, and the most beautiful lakes as I guide you to plan your next exciting trip!

Where to stay and how to get there

During my visit, I chose to stay in Interlaken, a charming town situated between two beautiful lakes, offering a perfect base for exploring the Jungfrau region. I personally stayed at a hostel, but there are numerous hotel options available to suit your preferences.

Getting there:

- Plane: For visitors heading to Interlaken, Bern is the most convenient airport to fly into. From Bern, transportation options include renting a car, taking a train, or catching a bus.

However, it's worth noting that while Bern is the closest airport, it may not always offer the most budget-friendly flights. Alternative airports to consider are Zurich and Geneva airports, both of which provide viable options for reaching Interlaken.

- Bus: Taking the bus is undoubtedly one of the most economical ways to travel between destinations across Europe, making it an attractive option for budget-conscious travelers. While it may take a bit longer compared to other modes of transportation, it's a great choice for those looking to save on costs.

- Train: (My choice) Trains present a fantastic alternative to flying when traveling to Interlaken from other European cities. The high-speed rail network across major European cities facilitates convenient and relatively speedy travel between countries.

Regardless of the major city you arrive in, connecting trains to Interlaken is needed.

How to get around

Unless you have a car, you will mostly be able to get around with either bus or train.

- Bus: If you're lodging in a hotel, B&B, or campsite in Interlaken for a duration of 3 days or more, your accommodation provider typically offers a complimentary travel card. This card grants you free access to the local bus network and discounts on a range of activities.

It's a valuable cost-saving benefit in Switzerland, especially considering the generally high expenses associated with most other aspects of travel in this region.

- Train:

In the Jungfrau region, traveling primarily revolves around an efficient and scenic train network. Trains are the lifeblood of transportation, seamlessly connecting the towns and villages within the region and offering breathtaking views of the Swiss Alps along the way.

Investing in a travel pass is a savvy choice, as it allows you to explore this picturesque area with ease while also saving you a considerable amount of money. Here are couple options for the travel passes to consider based on your travel plans:

  • Jungfrau Travel Pass: Unlimited Transportation Ticket: This is best suited to those that are going to be exploring the Jungfrau Region for 3-8 days. For comprehensive details, including maps and the option to purchase this pass, visit the official website.

  • Swiss Travel Pass: Unlimited Travel on Train, Bus & Boat: If you plan to visit multiple destinations throughout Switzerland, opting for the Swiss Travel Pass over the previously mentioned pass is highly advisable. Despite a slightly higher cost, this pass provides unparalleled value by granting unlimited travel on all forms of public transportation, including gondolas, for a duration of up to 15 days. Moreover, it includes complimentary access to over 500 museums and offers substantial discounts of up to 50% on various excursions, making it a comprehensive choice for an enriching Swiss travel experience. Visit the official website.
