Discover the Top 7 Hidden Gems in Southern Portugal 2023

Portugal is a beautiful country that offers a diverse range of travel experiences. From its stunning coastline, including the famous beaches of the Algarve, to the historic cities of Lisbon and Porto, there is something for everyone. With its warm climate, rich culture and history, and friendly people, Portugal is a popular destination for travelers looking for a unique and memorable experience. It's no wonder why it has become one of my favourite travel destinations.

I started my trip in Portugal by flying to Lisbon and after three days of exploring the city, I decided to take a bus and head south to experience a different side of the country. I took the Felixbus (Lisbon-Albufeira, which was just 20 euros and took three to four hours. The bus journey was comfortable and offered stunning views of the Portuguese countryside.

After spending a night in a hostel in Albufeira, my friend and I decided to embark on the "Seven Hanging Valleys Trail" to witness the breathtaking beaches and viewpoints of the Algarve region. The trail offered a unique opportunity to explore the scenic beauty of the region, taking us through the rolling hills, past secluded coves, and to stunning vistas of the coast. It was a challenging hike, but the breathtaking views made it all worth it. Please note that not all of these sights listed are part of this hike. After visiting Benagil, we explored the remaining locations by car. I highly recommend renting a car to have the flexibility to visit these stunning sights at your own pace. Driving through the Algarve allows you to fully immerse yourself in the region's natural beauty and truly experience the best that it has to offer.

When visiting the Algarve region of Portugal, there are several must-see sights that you don't want to miss. The following list highlights the top attractions, starting from the easternmost point along the coast and moving westward.

Praia do Vale do Olival:

Our first stop after Benagil was Praia do Vale do Olival. This secluded beach is located between cliffs, offering stunning views of the surrounding rock formations and crystal-clear waters. The beach is less crowded than some of the more popular spots, making it a perfect place to relax and soak in the peaceful atmosphere. With golden sand and inviting waters, Praia do Vale do Olival is a great place to unwind and enjoy the natural beauty of the Algarve.

Calixtos Beach Bar

While at Praia do Vale do Olival, we also stumbled upon Calixtos Beach Bar, a charming beachside bar located right on the sand. This is the perfect spot to enjoy a refreshing drink or a light bite to eat while taking in the stunning views of the coastline. With its laid-back atmosphere and friendly staff, Calixtos Beach Bar is a great place to relax and enjoy the natural beauty of the Algarve. Whether you're looking for a quick refreshment or a place to spend the afternoon, Calixtos Beach Bar is a must-visit spot along the Algarve coast.

Praia da Marinha: “Heart of the Algarve”

You might have seen the picture of the Heart-Shaped Rock in the Algarve, a beautiful hidden gem that is not an official tourist attraction, but rather a unique and picturesque rock formation in the Praia da Marinha area. This stunning coastal feature is known for its heart shape and attracts visitors from all over the world. To find the rock, visitors need to take a short hike along the cliffs, which offers spectacular panoramic views of the surrounding area. The Heart-Shaped Rock is a must-visit spot for anyone exploring the Praia da Marinha area or the Algarve region in general.

Algar de Benagil

The next must-visit spot along the Algarve coast is the Algar de Benagil, a stunning sea cave located near the town of Benagil. The cave is known for its unique domed ceiling and a circular opening at the top, which allows the sunlight to filter in and create a stunning effect on the water below. To reach the cave, visitors have two options - they can either take a hike to view the cave from above or take a boat tour from the nearby beaches, or rent a kayak and paddle over to the cave on their own to have a more intimate experience with the cave's beauty. Once inside the cave, visitors can take in the breathtaking beauty of the natural wonder and even swim in the crystal-clear waters. The Algar de Benagil is a highlight of any trip to the Algarve and is not to be missed.

Praia do Camilo

The next captivating spot along the Algarve coast is Praia do Camilo, a hidden gem near Lagos. This picturesque beach is renowned for its golden sands, clear turquoise waters, and distinctive twin sea stacks. Visitors can descend a scenic wooden staircase to access the beach, revealing breathtaking views of the Algarve coastline. The unique rock formations and intimate coves make it an ideal spot for sunbathing, snorkeling, or simply soaking in the natural beauty. Exploring the hidden nooks and crannies of Praia do Camilo adds to its allure. Whether you're a beach enthusiast or a nature lover, this beach is a must-visit, offering a memorable and serene escape along Portugal's stunning coast.

Lighthouse of Cabo de São Vicente

Continue your Algarve journey to the awesome Lighthouse of Cabo de São Vicente, perched on the very edge of Portugal's southwest coast. This old lighthouse is like a friendly sentinel overseeing the vast Atlantic Ocean, and it marks the most western part of Europe. The cliffs and the area around the lighthouse are stunning and great for exploring. You'll get a taste of maritime history and, of course, some amazing views. It's the perfect way to end your day while watching a beautiful sunset!

Praia do Amado

On our last day in the Algarve, we made a quick stop at the beautiful Praia do Amado. We walked down some wooden stairs to reach the wide, sandy beach. It was surrounded by tall cliffs, making the view quite stunning. Praia do Amado is famous for its great waves, and it's a popular spot for surfers. We could hear the waves crashing and feel the cool ocean breeze as we enjoyed our time there. Whether you're into surfing or just want to relax by the sea, Praia do Amado is a nice spot to visit before heading back home, leaving with wonderful memories of our Algarve adventure.

I highly recommend a visit to Portugal's captivating Algarve region. This area offers beautiful beaches, interesting history, and a rich culture that appeals to all types of travelers. The friendly locals and authentic experiences will create lasting memories. The Algarve's stunning coastline, with its hidden coves and impressive cliffs, is perfect for exploration. Its charm lies in its ability to capture your heart and leave you wanting to come back for more. It's a place where you can relax and enjoy life at a slower pace, making it a truly enriching and delightful destination.
